To buy life insurance, you’ll need to work with an agent. It can be an independent agent, like us, who works with many, many carriers, who you can work with a captive agent, who works directly for the life insurance company you’re applying to.
But every agent is not equal.
Many agents go around saying they have the best price, the cheapest rates or the most affordable term available. They aren’t wrong, but they aren’t telling you the whole truth.
Myth #1: One agent has access to cheaper rates than the rest.
This is false, unless the agent is captive; a captive agent can only get rates from one company, the one they represent, so they likely don’t have access.
However, an independent agent like us has access to the best possible life insurance rates, just like every other independent agent or agency out there.
If price is all you’re concerned about, we’ve got you covered (but, truthfully, so do any other agent).
Other agents say they can get you better rates because they can get you better ratings.
Myth #2: One agent can get you better ratings than the rest.
Meh, it’s possible. If an agent has no idea what they’re doing, they may stick you with the wrong carrier. This could result in worse ratings (or even a decline), but you’ll probably know the moment you’re on the phone with them.
Any agent worth their weight will know how to field underwrite (technically, a life insurance agent is called a field underwriter, because it’s our true job) with the best of them. The difference in price between two agents using different companies could be less than nickel a month.
Hardly worth wasting much time over.
Last, you’ve got agents who tout their 25+ years of experience claiming they know best.
Myth #3: One agents experience means they’re better than the rest.
Not only is this not true at all, but probably a scary claim from those who make it. The fact is, most agents in the life insurance industry are older, nearing retirement.
These agents rarely even have websites, let alone use the best technology available. Most of them still write their applications on carbon copy paper!
In today’s world, technology wins the battle almost every time, and those who claim experience are probably the dusty old agents who are sticking around just long enough to retire.
And, a side note, why would you want to work with an agent who is going to retire in a couple years? Then who is your agent? Nobody (well, except the customer service gal from the company you bought from).
